Guarding the Word: Why the Future of African Literature Needs both Heart and Law

When people look at my daily schedule, they often see a contradiction. By day, I am diving deep into legal statutes and jurisprudence at the Islamic University in Uganda. In the evenings, I step into my role as the Chief Operating Officer of Desha Publishing House, managing manuscripts and structural timelines. And in the quiet hours of the night, I return to my first love: writing poetry.

To the outside observer, law, corporate publishing, and creative writing are three distinct, isolated worlds. But to me, they are deeply interconnected forces that shape our society. Literature gives our culture its heartbeat, while the law provides the skeletal framework that protects it.

The Creative Heart: Finding Happiness Within Us

When I wrote my poetry anthology, Happiness Within Us, my goal was to distill the chaotic, beautiful landscape of human emotion into a universal language. Writing poetry requires intense vulnerability. It is an act of stripping away pretense to find core truths about courage, self-discovery, and resilience.

As a writer born and raised in Uganda, my prose is naturally inspired by our vibrant environments and the emotional resilience of our people. But as a creative, I quickly realized that writing a beautiful book is only the first step. The moment a manuscript leaves a writer’s notebook, it enters a vast, complex global industry. That is where the heart must meet structure.

The Corporate Reality: Empowering the East African Writer

Stepping into executive leadership at Desha Publishing House opened my eyes to the structural gaps in the East African literary scene. We have no shortage of brilliant storytellers. Walk down any street in Kampala, or listen to conversations in our communities, and you will encounter breathtaking narratives waiting to be written.

However, many upcoming authors lack the roadmap to transform their raw talent into a sustainable career. My work as a publisher is focused on building that roadmap—turning manuscripts into polished, internationally distributed works on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads. Being nominated as Edupreneur of the Year at the SHE Awards Africa was a powerful confirmation that our efforts to educate, mentor, and empower young writers are genuinely moving the needle for East African literature.

The Legal Framework: Protecting Our Cultural Intellectual Property

This brings me to my legal studies. In Africa, we have historically been masters of oral tradition and storytelling, but we have often lagged behind in protecting our intellectual property.

The future of African literature cannot rely on passion alone. If writers cannot feed themselves through their craft, our stories will fade. We need robust legal structures to combat digital piracy, enforce copyright protection, and ensure fair publishing contracts.

My pursuit of law is not a departure from my writing; it is a shield for it. I study law so that I can advocate for the creative community from a position of systemic knowledge. We need leaders who understand what it feels like to pour their soul into a page, but who also know exactly how to draft a contract that protects that soul.

The Path Forward

We are living in an era where African voices are finally taking center stage on the global platform. As a writer, an executive, and a future legal professional, my mission is to ensure that this movement is not just a passing trend, but a permanent shift.

To the writers sitting on unpublished manuscripts, and to the creatives fighting to be heard: continue to write with unfiltered heart. But remember to protect your mind, understand your rights, and claim your space in the professional world. Our stories are our legacy, and they are worth defending.

Finding the Power in Your Own Voice

When I wrote Happiness Within Us, I had to overcome the quiet fear that every writer faces: Will anyone care?

What I discovered through the process is that poetry is a universal language. The specific moments I wrote about—deeply rooted in my life in Uganda—connected with readers from entirely different backgrounds. The anthology became less about my own life and more about a shared human experience of finding joy, building resilience, and discovering who we are.
